The morning · Batalha or Alcobaça
Begin with stone, faith and royal memory
Leave Lisbon for a region where some of Portugal’s defining stories were carved into stone. Choose between the Monastery of Batalha and the Monastery of Alcobaça—two UNESCO World Heritage monuments, each extraordinary in its own way.
Batalha celebrates the victory that secured Portuguese independence and dazzles with late Gothic and Manueline detail. Alcobaça reveals the austere beauty of Cistercian architecture and the enduring love story of King Pedro and Inês de Castro.

Midday · Nazaré
Follow the road west to the Atlantic
Continue towards Nazaré, a seaside town whose identity has long been shaped by fishing, devotion and the ocean. Its beach, narrow streets and cliff-top neighbourhood of Sítio tell the story of a community that learned to live with the Atlantic.
We usually pause here for a relaxed lunch built around some of the freshest fish and seafood in the country, leaving time to encounter local traditions such as fish drying beside the beach.

The afternoon · Praia do Norte
Stand before the raw force of the ocean
Above Praia do Norte, beside the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, we look across the waters shaped by the deep Nazaré Canyon—the geological phenomenon behind some of the largest surfable waves ever recorded.
Giant waves depend on season and swell, most often appearing from November to March. When conditions align, watching surfers face this immense wall of water is an unforgettable display of courage and nature’s power; at other times, the landscape itself is reason enough to come.
