A day in the countryside: Évora and the Alentejo wine region
On this day trip we'll head to the countryside to discover the Alentejo region. We'll visit the capital of this region, the town of Évora, classified as a Unesco World Heritage since 1986, followed by a beautiful wine estate on a medieval Paço from the XIV century, reinvented by one of the best winemakers in Portugal.
During the morning we shall visit the Roman Temple of Évora (aka Templo de Diana), one of the most grandiose and best-preserved Roman temples in the Iberian Peninsula, built in the Corinthian style in the I century AD in the historic center of the city. We shall also visit the Church of São Francisco (originally built in the XIII century) and its weary Chapel of Bones. The Chapel of Bones was built in the XVII century with the intention of provoking reflection on the impermanence of human life through its imagery and consequently encouraging a commitment to a permanent Christian way of living, both the walls and the pillars are covered with several thousand bones and skulls, sourced from burial sites associated with the convent.
After Évora's monuments we shall take you to lunch and head to a wine estate in the area, owned by one of the best winemakers in Portugal. Located in the Alto Alentejo region, this winery features a medieval manor house founded in 1306 and also a modern winery located at a cork building, built in 2017. Distinguished as the best winemaker in Portugal in recent years, here we shall make a visit to the winery, learn about the wine making process and have a guided tasting of some of their outstanding wines, a perfect way to wrap up our day trip to the countryside.
