A trip to the North West: epic battles, fabulous monasteries and massive waves

A day dedicated to the North West region, to visit one of Portugal's most fabulous monasteries (Batalha or Alcobaça) and the quaint seaside village of Nazaré, home to the freshest seafood and some of the biggest waves in the world.

We'll start the day departing from Lisbon towards a village that is home to one of the most beautiful monasteries in Portugal (guests may choose if they wish to visit the Monastery of Alcobaça or the Monastery of Batalha), about 1.40h drive from Lisbon. Both these monasteries are fabulous in their own unique way and are well worth a visit to learn its history and see their beautiful buildings.

Upon completing our visit to the monastery, we shall head West in direction to the village of Nazaré, located by the Atlantic ocean. We usually suggest having lunch in Nazaré (home to some of the freshest seafood in the country) and then go see the place where the big waves of Nazaré are breaking, at Praia do Norte, right next to the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo (depending on the season - mostly between November and March - and swell predictions). In case we are lucky and we get to see the famous waves, this is a fabulous display of the heroic courage of men taking off the overwhelming force of nature, with the massive waves formed by the canhão da Nazaré.
