Sintra and Cascais: a trip to the westernmost point in mainland Europe
On this day trip we'll head out of the city to explore the area of Sintra, located northwest of Lisbon (about 45m drive). With its beautiful natural landscape, romantic atmosphere and historic monuments, Sintra is a protected natural park and a cultural site classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995.
We will start the morning with a short stroll in the Sintra village and a coffee and pastry at an iconic local pastelaria. We'll visit one of Sintra's fantastic monuments: to mention a few, the Sintra National Palace (Palácio Nacional de Sintra), Quinta da Regaleira, Pena Palace (Palácio da Pena) or the Moors Castle (Castelo dos Mouros) (or other of your preference).
After visiting Sintra's monuments, we'll ride down Sintra's winding and lush roads leading us to Cabo da Roca, the western most point in Continental Europe, where the dreadful Atlantic Ocean stretches as far as the eyes can see and ancient civilizations thought to be the end of the world.
As lunch hour approaches, we'll take you to some of the finest restaurants by the seaside for an exquisite taste of Portuguese cuisine. After a delicious meal at a beautiful setting, it will be time to head to the quaint seaside village of Cascais, our last stop for the day. Here we shall stroll along the bay and see the center of this fishing village. Of humble origins, in the last centuries Cascais became the favorite destinations for the royalty, nobility and high-class to spend their summers or build their permanent residencies, today being one of the wealthiest areas of Portugal.
If time allows, we shall finish the day with a beautiful scenic drive alongside the Atlantic Ocean and the Tagus river on our way back to Lisbon.
