To the South bank and beyond: Setúbal and Alcácer do Sal
On this full day trip we'll cross the Tagus River to discover the fishing village of Setúbal and a cooperative estate in Alcácer do Sal. A day dedicated to fresh produce and seafood, cork trees and wine, arts and crafts.
Located on a peninsula right by the Atlantic Ocean and the Sado River, Setúbal is an old village with its history deeply connected to fishing and seafaring activities. Here we'll visit the Mercado do Livramento, considered one of the best fish markets in the world. You'll get acquainted with a wide variety of fish and seafood available in Portugal and understand why the Portuguese people are among the top fish consumers per capita worldwide. As lunch hour approaches, we will have the chance to try some traditional recipes at one of the market stalls amongst locals and visitors.
We'll leave the market to take a stunning ferry ride across the Sado river estuary, passing by the area of Tróia and Comporta on the way to our next stop: a historic countryside cooperative estate (Cooperativa) established in 1947 (a kind of Portuguese small company town). Dedicated to the production of wine, cork, Iberian black pig prosciutto (porco preto, the pig breed used for the production of pata negra, an exquisite prosciutto produced in Portugal and Spain) and rice, this estate is a great example of a cooperative estate where many of the workers belong to families working and living there for several generations. Besides agriculture and cattle production, in the XXI century this estate became home to studios and ateliers of artists and craftsmen seeking refuge from the bustling life of the cities. We'll take a guided visit to a top notch woodwork studio producing high-end design furniture for leading hotels, restaurants, private homes and exhibitions around the world.
After an introduction on the history and activities of the estate, we'll learn about the different grape varieties and wine production methods used in this region while tasting a selection of the wines they produce, a perfect way to wrap the day before heading back to Lisbon.
