Downtown & Oldtown - unravelling the historic and culinary heart of Lisbon
On this full-day food tour we'll guide you through the historic center of Lisbon showing you some of its most emblematic areas, such as Chiado, Baixa, Mouraria and Graça. At the heart of the city we'll visit both traditional establishments that have been around for several generations and up-and-coming places that are part of the contemporary Lisbon food scene.
We'll kick start the day with some fine pastries and coffee to sweeten our palates and fuel the way. At a dazzling viewpoint, we'll take a moment to map the city we see before our eyes and understand the itinerary we will follow. We will visit a fresh produce market (on available days) and make friends with third and fourth generation fishmongers and vendors, stop at a mercearia selling fine Portuguese products (for almost a century!) to sample their local delicacies, sit at a new era snack-bar serving a juicy tender Bifana, and enjoy the atmosphere of a real marisqueira de bairro, serving the freshest seafood and vinho verde, among other pitstops and tidbits.
But there will also be plenty food for thought too: this tour will provide a journey across different historical periods and topics, such as the ancient origins and evolution of Lisbon, the Roman presence in the Iberian Peninsula, the Moorish and Arab influence in our culture, the azulejo tile art and its evolution over the centuries, the foundation and development of the Kingdom of Portugal, the navigations during the Age of the Discoveries and the establishment of the Portuguese empire, the spice and slave trades, the dictatorship ruled by Salazar in the XX century, the II World War and the neutrality of Portugal, the revolution of 1974, the end of the empire and the long-awaited independence of the former colonies, among other topics.
Join us for a deep cultural dive paired with delicious bites of Portugal along the way.
